Psychology: Week 2 Discussion

Topic: Week 2 discussion
Description:
In the Week 2 readings, we learn that the self is a distinct identity that sets us apart from others. There are a variety of diversity dimensions that make us unique, including race, gender, religion, age, and class. In addition, many of our identities intersect, and depending on the environment or social context, can be variously prominent.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Ch. 4 of Sociology in Modules challenges us to think of our personal identity and factors that influence how we are socialized, as well as how we socially engage. How would you describe yourself in terms of three prominent identity characteristics?
Share an example of a time when one of your diversity dimensions was more prominent than others. What made that specific diversity dimension stand out?
Share a time when one of your diversity dimensions conflicted with another.
How do your multiple diversity dimensions show up in the workplace? Are some of your diversity dimensions more prominent than others in the workplace setting?

parenting Today’s Children: A developmental Perspective

The seven factors that influence parenting styles are Familiarity, Children’s Age, Gender, Temperament, Family Size, Stress and When Parents Don’t Agree. Familiarity is a very common reason as to why parents adopt certain parenting styles. Some parents are not even aware that the same parenting style that they use on their children is the same one that their parents used on them. This factor makes for effective parenting by allowing the parents to see flaws in the way their parents raised them so that they will not make those mistake raising their children today. The age of their child will let the parents known which parenting style to use. Ellen Galinsky chart show the six developmental stage of parenting and how in each different stage the child requires a different type of parenting style. This factor makes for effective parenting because parent must make sure as their children get older, they also change their parenting style because failure to do so can lead to family conflict and the increase of stress. The gender of the child does play a role into how that child will be parented. Even with the global change some parents are still more traditional than others. It has been shown that mothers often used authoritarian parenting style on their daughters while using a more relax style on their sons. This factor makes for effective parenting by allowing the parents to see that both gendered children should be raised with the same parenting style. The temperament of the child has been known to greatly influence how the parents choose to parent that child. When raising the children, the parents own temperament should be brought into the mix because when they both have a similar or compatible temperament, they can both result in a positive outcome. This factor makes for effective parenting by allowing the parents to find more ways on how to raise that child without having to adopt the authoritarian style. The family size will have an influence on the parent parenting style. When a family is smaller the parents can devote more time to their children but if the family is larger, parents often adopt an authoritarian style of parenting. Children in large families will compete for their parent’s attention while also seeking guidance and advice from their other siblings. This factor makes effective parenting by reminding the parents to make time for all their children no matter how big or small the family is. Stress is another factor that can influence and affect a parent parenting style. The environment and other factor such has job uncertainty and housing instability can take up parent’s time and energy leaving them to adopt a more authoritarian style. When a family has more outside support this can lead to less stress which will result in a more effecting parenting style. Parents not agreeing is the last factor that can influence their parenting style. The mother has been known to have a more nurturing and caring side while the father has been known to be more traditional and more of a strict disciplinarian. This last factor makes for effective parenting by allowing the child to have a combination of a structured and also lax childhood.

Factors that influence Parenting Styles

The seven factors that influence parenting styles are familiarity, children’s age, gender, temperament, family size, education and culture, and stress. Familiarity and experience influence parents into their preferred parenting style. Parents may often unconsciously raise their children the way they were raised because they are familiar with that parenting style. Although for that same reason parents may choose to take a different approach with their children. A child’s age also contributes to a parent’s type of parenting style. Ellen Galinsky’s six stages of parenting illustrates a child’s development and the changes a parent should make to adjust their child-rearing style based on each stage (Marotz & Kupyzk, 2018, p. 138). For example, an adolescent should be treated with a different approach than a toddler. The next factor that may influence parenting styles is gender. Researchers found that older female siblings are held at higher academic standards than their younger male siblings. It is also said that mothers are more demanding towards their sons while their fathers are lax. A child and their parents’ temperament can also influence their interactions and child-rearing practices. If a child and their parent’s temperament clash, then this can harm the child’s social-emotional development as well as their relationship. When family size increases parents may resort to an authoritarian parenting style. Families with fewer children tend to be more attentive and careful of their child’s needs because immediate compliance is not necessary. When parents have more education, they tend to practice an authoritative style. In recent years parents have leaned towards the authoritative style because they are beginning to understand the positive effects this approach can have. Lastly, stress can also affect a parent’s child-rearing style. Stress can affect the emotions of either the parent or the child resulting in a change of parenting style. Anxiety and stress lead to a more authoritarian approach in parents.

AH386: American Modernisms

AH386: American Modernisms

Visual Analysis Paper:

This paper (2-3 pages) should analyze one of the following objects at the Museum of Fine Arts:

*James Abbott McNeil Whistler, The Last of Old Westminster, 1862

*Mary Cassatt, Mrs. Duffee Seated on a Striped Sofa, Reading, 1876

*William Glackens, Italo-American Celebration, Washington Square, c.1912 226)

Your task is to analyze the ways that your chosen artwork uses the characteristic material forms and symbolic language of its medium (oil paint) to advance a particular account of its subject (urban rivers/waterfronts, women’s literary leisure, or a bohemian Parisian neighborhood). To this end, your paper should carefully describe the formal composition of your chosen painting and analyze how specific pictorial tactics employed by that work contribute to an interpretation of the person/place that it represents. Papers should address the artwork’s localized details and broader structure, and remain attentive to any elements that may add complexity or contradiction to the artwork’s interpretation of its subject.

Papers should be submitted through the Blackboard site; please use the “visual analysis paper” link in the Assignments section of the website.

Papers should be 4-5 pages with standard formatting (double spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins), and should take the form of a Word document or pdf file.

Please do NOT incorporate text or information from the MFA website in your paper.

As you consider your chosen work, you may wish to consider:

*the distribution of light and shadow within the scene

*the colors employed in the scene (bright or muted? Hot or cool? Harmonious or discordant?)

*viewpoint (where are we situated? What sort of view do we enjoy?)

*composition: relationship between the fore/middle/backgrounds (visual or thematic)

*the suggestion of space and/or recession (does the picture create the illusion of navigable space, or does it seem to flatten out/emphasize the flat plane of the canvas?)

*the role of any/all figures in the scene

*handling of light/atmosphere

*paint handling (is it tactile/thick or transparent/thin? Is brushwork visible or concealed? How are individual forms articulated in paint? Does the brushwork suggest spontaneity or careful deliberation?)

*the urban setting (where in the city is the scene set? How does the picture render the spaces/forms of the urban fabric? How does the picture position the viewer in relation to its setting?)

*the social character of the urban subject (what sorts of city dwellers does the painting depict? What kinds of buildings/establishments? Does the picture suggest anything about the social life of its urban setting?)

PLEASE REMEMBER: This is not a research paper. You should not refer to website text or other supporting materials (online resources, etc.) related to these objects.

You should instead build your interpretation around a detailed and sensitive formal analysis of the artwork derived from your sustained observation of the work. You may also draw on class discussions and/or your textbook to think about the ways that your portrait relates to other period paintings.

A few hints about building your arguments:

***Look at your selected work for an extended segment of time, and take as many notes about the work as you can—these notes should be the primary ‘raw data’ that you will use to make your case.

***As you develop your interpretation, be sure to support general claims (i.e. “the portrait underscores the intelligence of the sitter”) with specific formal details.

***Try to build a nuanced interpretation of your chosen work—look for any passages of ambiguity, contradiction, or complexity that might complicate the apparent or “surface” meaning of the painting or sculpture.

Psychology Week Six Discussion

The last chapters covered some of the ways that social pressure influences our actions. This weeks discussion post will be an extension of your Try This! Assignment. We are all prone to behavioral changes through compliance, obedience, or persuasive principles. We follow the rules of our society (both legally enforceable ones as well as those that are just informally polite), sometimes with little awareness of why we do what we do. But once in a while, something odd happens, and we accidentally break the rules.

For this discussion, I want you to take it further and think about a time when you witnessed someone break an implicit norm. PLEASE REMEMBER IMPLICIT NORMS ARE NOT ILLEGAL, they are UNWRITTEN RULES. Reflect on what implicit norm you saw violated and how it made you feel. What did you learn about yourself? Name at least one concept weve discussed so far in the course that you can apply to how you explained this persons behavior or how it made you fee
